[REQUEST] Interest in old versions of 3DS Max/Maya
Hey all,
Older versions of these programs seem to be pretty elusive; 3DS Max in particular has a lengthy history.
I was glad to see 3D Studio 4 hosted on WinWorld, but searching for any of the other versions yielded no results. (For reference, Wikipedia has an extensive list of all the releases through the years)
Maya on the other hand is a newer product, with its initial release in '98. Still, having that 1.0 version would be nice.
Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

I typed in "3D Studio Max 1.0" and it was the third hit.
You did say One Point Oh - amiright?
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=c ... io+MAX+1.0
So it is just a useless pile of bits.
ah....
In addition, I also found a BA thread on Google (specifically for Discreet 3dsmax 4) But all of the download links were broken unfortunately.
Anyway, once the Russian guys got the dongle trick figured out, they were even pimping softs on Usenet. Ah, the glory days!
The base DoD release comprises app rox 8 Disc with a normal SETUP.EXE.
The NFO says to:
³ After unarjing the disks to a dir, unzip the last disk (disk 9 is NOT ³
³ part of the arj set) to the dir also. Let it overwrite the non cracked ³
³ files. Then run install. When the installation program asks for DISK2 ³
³ (A:), the user should navigate to the \DISK2 directory. And press OK. The³
³ DISK2 directory should contain the following files : 3dsmax2.ex_ (830Kb) ³
³ and disk2.id. The last file 3dsmax1.ex_ (1.5Mb) should be in the ³
³ directory \3DSMAX.
Everything about these files look to be a normal installer set WITH an "unprotected EXE.
It's DoD and part of why they were so wildly popular is the released some expensive shit - and it worked.
So I don't know what the "mess" of files are over at Vetusware (I downloaded, but have taken the time to open it) but I'm pretty damned sure this set I have is the legit DoD release of 3DS MAX 1.0.
Just saying...
Many thanks for the contribution and search, 02k-guy. If it is the DrinkOrDie release that would be wonderful!
It seems to be the exact same fileset as at old.dos.ru.
Any, after more rummaging, I found:
- 3DS MAX v1.1 UPGRADE_MTY.rar
- CHARACTER STUDIO 3D STUDIO MAX PLUGIN FINAL RELEASE.rar
- SAND BLASTER V1.0 FOR 3D STUDIO MAX.rar
Also, on the old.dos.ru page, someone commented that regardless of crk or not, you have to locate and install the Sentinel drivers - which I did.
Here's the old.dos.ru link (in google translate):
https://translate.google.com/translate? ... rev=search
1. The packages are complete and usable
2. The instructions are horrible
3. Packages found on Abandonware sites have had little kids with fingers sticky from jam mess with them.
The most important point I want to make is that the necessary dongle "crack" is present, however:
1. very few are getting the Sentinel Hardware Lock Drivers installed into their OS. The software insists on reading the drivers - the crack simply tells 3D Studio MAX that a valid result was found - even though it never actually "talked" to the dongle.
2. If you have a newer laptop with no Parallel Port - well, what then?
Finally, these early versions were only designed to work on NT 3.51, later on W95 and NT 4.0. Much has changed in the driver models and mapping of I/O.
Interestingly, I managed to install the Vetusware 3D Studio MAX 1.0 on this Windows 7 x64 machine. What a PITA!!!
Just yesterday, I finally found the 2nd necessary "fix" to get 3DS MAX 2.5 running.
I do not believe they would be suitable for Winworld.
However, just today, I find a complete working "package" of 3DS MAX v2.5 - with all the required "fixes" and some extras.
Get it here:

Here's a single-EXE complete portable of Kinetix 3.1... It makes a sandbox inside the EXE directory so most modern paranoid AV or 'security feature' shouldn't flag it as 'trying to do something'...
Everything pretty much work as should-
Pass is WinWorld

As far as old Maya versions best to not go too old...I am working on Maya 4.5 testing scripts & plugs & it is the oldest I feel is relevant as it has the smooth proxy feature... It has no mental ray but the native is just fine but I also got VirtuaLight render which integrates real good for Real GI vs Fake GI...Nice version to run real nice on old crappy machines I have it running on Dell D400 (@ 2003) with 12.1 inch screen, 1.5 GB RAM run like clockwork as well as many other...
That's a caustic example scene which easily looks as good as any of the older mental ray renders & in just 33 seconds on that old single-core...
On the opposite end I threw this together & used script 'domeGI' to create a fake GI effect using standard maya software render, took a bit longer maybe 3 minutes as there's 70 lights to calculate in this simple scene-
At least they put the price right upfront-
One dollar less than 7 grand I guess it makes it look way cheaper...
