Bootable win95 iso?

edited December 2016 in Software
People are saying that windows 95 iso's aren't bootable at all. However, with my cd image it does boot. maybe it's just virtualbox
Also, it's an OSR2 image if that has any contributing factor.

  • I think that is Not official ISO from Microsoft.
Official Windows 95 CD (Retail Upgrade / OEM or OSR) doesn't include boot sector.
So it can't be boot from CD directly.

*Windows 98 OEM begin to support CD boot.
(Retail Full or Upgrade doesn't support CD boot.)
  • There may have been a few OEM versions that were bootable, but most were not. As ibmpc5150 said, the retail disks directly from Microsoft were NOT bootable.

The reason being that bootable CD support in PCs was very new back then and not well supported. Rather than walking a million users through instructions trying to figure out why their computers wold not boot a CD, Microsoft instead chose to omit that feature.

OEMs on the other hand, had the luxury of certifying that the new computers provided with their OEM disks could indeed boot them.

If you have a factory original CD that is bootable, please dump an ISO image and include a scan so we can figure out exactly who made it.
