Windows 98 SE Product Key Not Working

edited December 2016 in Site Issues
Windows 95 worked a lot for me. But not Windows 98 SE.

When I tried to install Windows 98 SE to VMware, it says Operating System Not Found?
Does Windows 98 SE still really need MS-DOS?

Also, when I've already installed MS-DOS, it works for a while until it asked me for a product key. I tried to type any sort of product key but it always says The Product Key You Typed Is Invalid.

  • 1. For me with VMware, you have to format the hard disk first, and then when you reboot VMware automatically loads the hard drive instead of the disc. So then you need to reboot, quickly click into the VM to make it active and then push ESC to get to the boot selection menu. From there you choose the CD option.

    2. Yes, Windows 98 SE still needs DOS. In fact, it's based on Windows 98, which is based on Windows 95, which is based on DOS. Work that one out.

    3. Does MS-DOS need a product key? Since when? Or are you talking about Windows 98 SE? (I feel retarded for asking that.)

Check this page which contains a lot of serial keys: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=6677
  • Well, it is Not related with site issue.

I recommend to ask this question on Software thread.

Also your question seems to be insufficient.

First, you must inform the Windows 98 SE version.
Second, which Product Key you've tried to install.

Windows 98SE version exist as Retail Full, Retail Upgrade, OEM normally.

Product Key is Not compatible with each version.

    For Example :

If you install Windows 98 OEM (Bootable from CD), you can use Product Key for OEM (Not possible with Key for Retail full or Retail Upgrade)

You can see the Windows 98 SE Product Key on Google.com
  • Sounds like its nothing atall to do with product keys. Rather, its not understnding how to work with an ISO.

You could install UltraIso, or Alcohol 120% as a 3rd party solution. Anyhow, for those wanting a pure Microsoft solution to mounting an ISO as a virtual CD-ROM - get this Virtual CD driver:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=38780

"This utility enables users of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 to mount ISO disk image files as virtual CD-ROM drives."

I will comment that the UltraISO virtual driver has not always worked for me - some particular images - haven't found out why yet.

On the other hand, each time this error occured, the Alcohol 120% driver did work.

I do believe many of the CD-ROM burner softs now offer a "Virtual Driver".

EDIT: The Microsoft driver is NOT W7 x64 compatible - it lacks driver digital signing.
  • Boy, I cannot leave a thread alone. I found a solution for the "unsigned driver in Windows 7, x64.

    http://www.ngohq.com/?page=dseo

The software facilitates putting Windows 7 in "Test Mode", and self-signing a driver - or other file.

This has been doable before; but these folks made it a heck of a lot easier.

If you go here and download the virtual floppy driver

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details ... drive_(vfd).html

it includes a PDF on how to use the above link and do the whole process.

    Very nice!
