How to install Windows 1.0 DR5

edited January 2017 in Software
Hey, everyone! I have a problem. I'm trying to install WIndows 1.0 DR5 on PCem, but the problem is, in the file copying part of the setup it comesup with error messages such as "Unable to create directory" and "Insufficient disk space", even though I have formated the C drive and I have an 8MB virtual hard disk. I've tried PCem 0.5 and 11, and I get the same problem. Is there a solution to this?

  • It might sound backwards, but try making the hard drive smaller. I don't know the disk limits for Windows 1.0 and DOS, but try 2MB. Windows doesn't even take up that much space anyway.
  • DR 5 just has a batch file for an installer. That does not check free space.

Probably it is trying to install to the floppy drive.

It looks like you have to run it with the C: drive as the current drive.

    For example:

    C:\>A:INSTALL [press enter]

keep in mind DR 5 is VERY picky about its environment.
  • I've tried to install Windows 1.0DR5 on IBM PC 5160 (DOS 2.10 on 10MB HDD).

But the problem is that the following message is shown afer replacing disk 2.

"Insert disk with batch file and press any key when ready"

This means it can't be installed from A>INSTALL.BAT or C>A:\INSTALL

To solve this problem, COPY "INSTALL.BAT" on C:\ (Hard Drive C:)

    COPY A:INSTALL.BAT C:\

    Then run INSTALL.BAT on C:\

    C:\INSTALL

This DR5 release supports Mouse Driver well.
  • Thank you very much for the suggestions. I copied the INSTALL.BAT file to C: and it worked! It's similar to the instalation procedure of the Alpha version of Windows 1.0 where you had to copy the WININST.BAT to the C drive.
