IBM PC DOS 7.0 (3.5)

Hi There,

Bit new to this so could use some help please guys.

I need to create a set of installation floppies or CD for IBM PC DOS 7.0 , I have downloaded a file from here which has given me 6 .img files , the question now is how do i get these onto a media than can be booted and installed?

Could really use some help as an old retro machine is ready to go but needs an OS.

PC-DOS 7.0 was only available on XDF format floppies (~1.8mb sort of like DMF but more complicated). Those can only be written using a real floppy drive, not a lobotomized USB floppy. If I recall correctly, the creation tool should be included in each archive, but it is a DOS program. There is also a kryoflux dump if you happen to have a Kroflux card.

Do yourself a favor and just use PC-DOS 2000 (or MS-DOS 6.22) instead.

Well, PC DOS 2000 *is* technically still PC DOS 7.0.

PC DOS 7.1 wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Boot disk images and DOS utilities are included in the IBM ServerGuide Scripting Toolkit, link below. There are five files on the page to download, just get the ZIP archive.

EDIT: To answer your original question, WinImage can be used to write floppies. The images in the archive are .VFD images, but as far as I know, the only difference is the file extension. WinImage handles them just fine.

Pretty sure VFD and IMA are the same thing. I use the extension 144 myself (along with others).

I thought I said that. Just wanted to let OP know that the disk images in the IBM archive had a different extension than images from the library, but they work just as well.

There is a DOS program called "Fakedisk" that mounted most common images, including XDF.
