Vintage hard disks

edited February 2017 in Hardware
I've begun to collect MFM hard disks for the heck of it - but some brand names have surfaced that I can't find much (if any) data on.

In particular, Cogito and Tulin.

I've got a Cogito CG906 / CG912 coming in the mail, but I can't find any information other than the CHS parameters and the eBay listing I bought it from.

Any help?

A useful reference for CHS parameters:

  • They sound obscure. All I could find were eBay listings for very small drives and a Wikipedia article listing hard disk makers who've gone out of business. Cogito and Tulin were both there.
  • If I had more money, I'd grab some more MFM hard drives myself.

I know I have heard of Tulin, but I don't recall anything about them. What kind of information are you looking for?

Unfortunately, things like schematics weren't usually available.

The other day I noticed this large list of defunct hard drive manufacturers on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_d ... ufacturers

Kind of an interesting and depressing read.

You can probably find a little more information by searching Google Books, but probably not much besides old pricing.

Just where to find drives cheap, maybe some way to get DOS to install on a disk with a lot of bad tracks (Kalok Octagon KL320 with 532 bad tracks)?
Manuals and CHS parameters would be nice as well, and maybe some manuals for my MFM controllers (I could only find the manual for a DTC 5150XL card).

That's why I bought the Cogito. I didn't see them on Wikipedia last I checked, so I'll look again.

On the lookout for a CMI disk.

I plan to share the details of these drives either here or on my website. Link below, there's nothing much yet, and it may change servers some time soon, but I'm going to upload the text information right now and put pictures of the disks on there as well.

If anyone's got anything to add, I'd be grateful for the information. Suggestions would be nice as well.

Same, no idea how I overlooked it. Usually I'd use Vogons?
