MacOS System Software version numbers

Ok, I was taking another look at Apple's version numbering for their early MacOS:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_Mac_OS

Their version numbering between the first release and system 6 was an insane mess.

At some point apparently Apple released a list of what THEY called each release. However, this is completely different from the system/finder versions reported by the software. As I recall, absolutely no one ever called MacOS by Apple's designations.

For example, magazine articles will talk about software requiring "system 4.1", although according to apple there was no such official product designation. But somehow people started referring to 4.2 and 4.3 as 5.x.

Does anyone know if Apple anywhere marked their products with their supposed "System Software Release" numbers?

It looks like eventually I will need to renumber some of these versions and add some more information.
