[REQUEST] Caldera OpenDOS

edited February 2016 in Offers & Requests
Caldera OpenDOS seemed to be a DOS operating system released in 1997 by Caldera UK.

From Wikipedia:

"Caldera UK officially released Caldera OpenDOS 7.01 in February 1997, but this version was just Novell DOS 7 update 10 (as of December 1994) with a new name, missing a year's worth of patches which had been developed for the Novell DOS updates 11 (January 1995) to 15.2 (January 1996).[24] This was due to parts of the Novell DOS sources having been lost at Novell meanwhile.[25] Consequently, this version still reported an internal BDOS version of 7.2, identical to Novell DOS 7. The new suite also lacked the SETFIFO command, which had been added with one of the Novell DOS updates, as well as Fifth Generation's Search&Destroy virus scanner and FastBack Plus 2.0 utility, which previously came bundled with Novell DOS. Instead it brought an advanced version of NetWars.

Parts of OpenDOS 7.01 were released as open source in form of the M.R.S. kit (for Machine Readable Sources) in May 1997, but with license terms mostly incompatible with existing open source licenses. The source was then closed again as Gross felt this would undermine the commercial aspirations of the system."

Can WinWorld carry this? Under DR-DOS, we have Novell and Devicelogics, but no Caldera. It seemed to be a minor variation of DR-DOS.

  • the open-dos version was 7.01, and apparently the dr-dos version 7.01. is the same exact version as open-dos 7.01 , when the company sold open-dos to another company that got renamed to DRDOS , it became drdos 7.01, which is still the same as the open-dos 7.01, if you download the dr-dos 7.01, disk and look at the files, it still says open-dos 7.01, and dr-dos 7.01, is in the archive.
  • i just found a new things with open-dos 7.01, it is basically DrDos 7.00 with an update, so opendos 7.01 is actually DrDos 7.00 update 1, the version should be called open-dos 7.1, but they didn't want to confuse compatibility with ms-dos 7.1 from windows 9x , so it got the version number 7.01.

Too bad I can't find the exact OpenDOS.

However, I did find it's files on an FTP server. Not floppy images, though.
  • I've had a zipfile of OpenDOS 7.01 1.44 MB disk images for years...files are stamped Aug. 18, 2006, 1:18 AM, and if you hit F5 at boot it'll say it's Caldera OpenDOS 7.01. I can't imagine it's uncommon. Might've been called "full1440.zip"
