What version of Windows 98SE is best for my IBM PC?

Heya ,

So recently I picked up an old IBM PC out by my buildings dumpster, and I see there's a Windows 98 SE Product key on there, but below it says "IBM©". I got the PC to work, though I'm having trouble trying to figure out what OS runs best on it; I'd like to get the original OEM OS on the HDD. What is best?

Here's the specs:

Intel Pentium III
512 MB of RAM
80 GB HDD
Floppy Disk Drive (FDD)
(Didn't find a CD ROM drive with it)

  • It depends what you are using it for. 98 or XP would work. 98 is better if you plan to run many DOS programs or doing floppy archival. (Or you can try out Linux or BSD)

I think this question seems to to be nonsense.

You have production key of Windows 98SE for IBM OEM.
So the best way is to use Windows 98SE OEM.
Of course, the PC supports Windows 98SE Retail full or upgrade version, but
you need the another product key.
(No available OEM product key with retail version.)

    Ok thank you

DOS support is very poor in Windows 2000 with standard lightweight applications. I wouldn't even bother with games.

    Yeah. W2k about DOS.
    How about IBM OS/2?
