Werid problem in my Dell OptiPlex GX280

edited December 2019 in Hardware

Hi guys, I removed the Pentium 4 2.80ghz CPU and installed a Pentium 4 651 3.40ghz. But when i installed P4 651 on my OptiPlex GX280, it shows the soild amber/orange power light and when i put the original 2.80ghz Pentium 4 CPU back, it turns the power light green and picture is shown on the monitor. So does this has to do with the BIOS or something?

  • Sounds like you'll need to update the BIOS to support the new CPU.

When i first got this computer, it has the A08 BIOS, I'm not sure if this is the latest BIOS or not.

Some Dells are picky about CPU. If the BIOS update doesn't work, you're likely stuck. Also, sort of related: The GX280 was plagued by bad capacitors. Might want to look and see if any of them are starting to bulge.

  • Looks like A08 is the latest BIOS. I tried to track down an official CPU support list for that model, but my Google Fu appears to be lacking. This was the best I was able to dig up from other forums:

    D7459 Prescott P4 Kit, 520, 2.80G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T
    P8606 Prescott P4 Kit, 520, 2.80G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, E0
    DD517 Prescott P4 64bit Kit, 521, 2.80G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, E0
    RG427 Prescott P4 64bit Kit, 521, 2.80G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, G1
    D7460 Prescott P4 Kit, 530, 3.00G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T
    R8419 Prescott P4 Kit, 530, 3.00G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, E0
    D7462 Prescott P4 Kit, 540, 3.20G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T

    DD519 Prescott P4 64bit Kit, 541, 3.20G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, E0
    D7463 Prescott P4 Kit, 550, 3.40G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T
    M8964 Prescott P4 Kit, 550, 3.40G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, E0
    GH035 Prescott P4 64bit Kit, 551, 3.40G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, G10
    D7464 Prescott P4 Kit, 560, 3.60G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T
    P8605 Prescott P4 Kit, 560, 3.60G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, E0
    M8965 Prescott P4 Kit, 570, 3.80G, 800FSB, 1MB, Socket-T, E0

The 651 doesn't appear to be supported.

As a last ditch effort, you could try clearing the CMOS and see if it'll boot then, but from what I can find, I wouldn't hold out hopes getting that CPU to work.
