What is your favorite type of software?

It can be 8-bit, 16-bit, and only software (no operating systems). You could also do games here.
You can also provide links if possible, and also tell me why it's your favorite.

Couple of mine:

Donkey Kong (runs in CGA, MS-DOS program): https://mega.nz/file/TJ8FnLRQ (Key: knkVb4BtgfhQrW3VYQOWgXSj4LKpy1QYF3flgWj6nT0)
Microsoft Office (for Windows 3.0 or upper): https://winworldpc.com/product/microsoft-office/2x
Wolfenstein 3D (for MS-DOS): https://winworldpc.com/product/wolfenstein-3d/all
Visual Basic 1 (for Windows 3.0 or upper): https://winworldpc.com/product/microsoft-visual-bas/10
Windows 1.x to 95 (because Windows 98 is slow, go read "toastytech.com" for inspiration): https://winworldpc.com/product/windows-10/101, https://winworldpc.com/product/windows-95/rtm, and of course, https://toastytech.com

Before you complain that Windows 95 was it's own opreating system, it wasn't. It was just a graphical shell that ran on top of MS-DOS 7.x.

I will update my list every now and then. But, I have couple others that I can't remember.

  • I like reference software the most. Just goes to show that you don't really need the internet to look up the simplest of things. I found them very handy years before I ever had an internet connection at home (and that was during 2001-03).

Also, I thought Windows 3.1 was the last to be built on top of DOS. That's one thing I've learnt today! :D

    @Bry89

    At last, a comment!
    EDIT: like what reference software?
  • Stuff like Encyclopedia Britannica, and also 3D World Atlas 98 that I got here years ago.
  • My favorite type of software is old MS-DOS application software and application development software. Comparison between offerings at the time and with modern software is revealing. The best was by no means always the most successful and the functionality of some old stuff still compares favorably with modern offerings. I have both a Virtualbox pc image and a real HP Mini Netbook which have identical software. Screen shots of the menu system show what I have installed (mainly from Winworld).

    DOS, OS/2, Windows. No, not the applications, the OS themselves. Not fussed on vista though (vi = 6, vi.i = 7, vi.ii = 8, vi.ii.i = 8.1, vv = 10)

also cross-platform stuff: Rexx, 4os2, ScriptEase, LaTeX, Amipro.
  • My favorite software is Chrome (idc how many people hate it), MS Office, MS Plus!, WinRAR (same as with chrome), 7-zip, Discord, and som other Windows software.
