OFFER! - MetaTools Bryce 2 Portable Win32 (1996)>>>

Whilst collecting up Bryce 4 stuff I found this Bryce 2 Portable...

From 1996 while still 'MetaTools'...System Requirements will be hard to meet-

That from the site here-

https://web.archive.org/web/19961219003815/http://www.metatools.com/bryce/

Work fine on XP SP3 portable so no worries about install EXE is pre-patched...

I have added to library as many materials as can be found they are easy to spot as extension is different from any later versions as Bryce 1&2 Different code from later on versions...

There are extra Picture Objects some extra Gels & some unusual terrain alphas for weirdness beyond...

There is no animation in Bryce2 so the lower right button is 'display mode' button which quite neatly toggles between view modes & in wireshadow over render you can move scene in opposition to render to tweak a better position for NEXT render...

I have included some scenes from Bryce 2 Accessory disc as well-

  • Just to add...Nowadays with much more powerful machines (even old ones) you can squeeze MORE out of this old Bryce...

You can make distance, altitude & mask maps right in Bryce to take into photoshop or similar for a variety of porpoises...

Looks like the mask map was inverted evidently you must pick what you want masked out in Bryce2 in later versions opposite that...

Also to tame sun shadows of harsh crap or simulate radiosity you can make light arrays...First make one by duplicating lights however many then taking intensity of each down to 4-6, then select the lights & 'Group' then duplicate this array 3 times (or however many) & position to surround points of interest...Here is what I am talking & is the above scene-

In such a case you wanna turn off sun but in Bryce 2 there is no function so you just change sun to BLACK color...

Ingenious use of terrains also as they can be used for castle walls with REAL displacement or much other the terrain editor quite powerful...
  • REUPLOADING all this... Amazing it will be 30 years old in just a few years...

Playing around with it again I got the notion some might not understand WTF is going on when opening scenes...Remember that back then display REZ was real low so you have to reconfigure GUI & document size... Also render setting tend to be krappy because back then spending a day rendering a single scene was normal...

Let the GIF mesmerize & confuse you-

also even though the Deep Texture Editor was not there yet there's still plenty of procedural power for the time-

  • Had been looking for this 3D Convertor on my drives... It's an old version of InterChange from 1997 but does great job of converting 3DS & OBJ to the DXF that Bryce2 needs to ingest...It's open directory portable...

Interchange don't like 'spaces' in directory paths so make sure you have none. Best to have a bunch to do at once from same folder...

It'll do a number of old 3D format you no longer see in newer convertors so good for that use...

I also found 20 nice materials for Bryce2 I added in as well...

As to importing your DXF models they will come in 'grouped' & in order to smooth the parts you will have to 'ungroup' them then click on individual pieces to smooth and change materials. When finished deselect everything then from top menu 'select all' then 'group' again NOW you can add it to objects library... You can tumble the preview thumb to give a better final thumbnail for the model, give it a name & even a description if you want... Then it's time to get busy & RIP back into the mid-90's...

    Do it...DO IT!!!

  • useful 3D converter app
  • Yes...Supports some cool old formats...

Well, for the bryce peeps I been converting some of my PNG cutouts to TiFF for use in all the Bryce versions. These are 'different' from the usual boring cutouts like 'cellphones', 'desklamps', 'butterflies'... Suitable for Dali kinda strange art or steampunk-divers etc

    Thumbs-

You simply bring into Bryce2 as 2D picture objects-

    NO PASS...
