  • The 5.5-2H4 CD image worked just fine on 3 physical VAXen I have.

  • I was able to get VMS 5.5-2H4 to install onto simh from the iso here. I copied the iso file into the current directory and disabled most things to keep things simple. I know next to nothing about vms but I was able to figure it out -the hardest part was figuring out the name of the save_set to restore from. Here's the simh ini file I used:

    #---install.ini:
    set ts dis
    set tq dis
    set rl dis
    att nvr nvr.ram
    cpu 64m
    set cpu idle=vms
    set rq0 ena
    set rq0 ra92
    set rq1 ena
    set rq1 cdrom
    set xq ena
    att rq0 rq0-ra92.dsk
    att rq1 "VMS 552h4 VAX.iso"
    att xq nat:
    boot

    #The save_state file on cd is: VMS2H4055.B
    #restore it with:
    #BACKUP/IMAGE/VERIFY DUA1:VMS2H4055.B/SAVE_SET DUA0:
    #As per section 3.3 of http://bitsavers.trailing-edge.com/pdf/dec/vax/vms/5.5/AA-NG61D-TE_VMS_5.5_Upgrade_and_Installation_Nov1991.pdf
  • The above may give mixed results depending on what SIMH version you are using.

With SIMH v4.0-0 (Mark Pizzolato) you might get the device name: DJA1 for the ISO file.

If you disable AUTOSIZE then you will get DUA1 as the device name:
    set rq1 cdrom
    set rq1 NOAUTOSIZE
    attach rq1 -r openvms_v5.5-4h2.iso

If you use Open SIMH v4.1-0 you will probably just get DUA1 as the device name and not have to disable AUTOSIZZE at all.
