If your installation of any of the Win32s 1.30x APIs is making 32-bit apps crash on a VMWare-based system, try setting the VMWare option for that system to "Disable acceleration for binary translation" (under VM Settings-Hardware-Processors). This should protect against the execution of the protected machine instructions that are causing it to crash. You can verify this with the FreeCell test application. Works for me.
Technically I think Office 4.2 for NT sort of runs, but it is not designed for that. And there is a native Windows 3.1 version of Office 4.2 anyway.
