Windows 2000 was a modernization of Windows NT 4.0 which brought many of the desktop changes, including Active Desktop, to Microsoft's Windows NT line. Four editions of Windows 2000 were released, Professional, Server, Advanced Server, Datacenter Server. Improvements over NT 4.0 include new Accessibility Options, increased language and locale support, NTFS 3.0, the Encrypting File System and Active Directory. Windows 2000 was first planned to replace both Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 although using the NT kernel for consumer and professional editions would not happen until Windows 2000's successor, Windows XP.

  • Wow, i never knew of these builds. I'll try to install Build 1902.
  • Hi!
I tried installing VBEMPK video drivers onto NT5 Build 1877 and now winlogon.exe crashes to a blue screen on start up
If any one knows how to fix this or has a better/compatible driver for NT5, that would be greatly appreciated!

For those who want to try these builds out, these builds are recommended to install as UPGRADE ONLY, which means, you need to have either NT 4.0 already installed (what I used), or any other OS. Chances are you might actually get it to work by clean install, but I personally recommend via upgrading.

However, with build 1906, you'll need to do a little go around, since the autorun can't find 2 of the files to start setup, due to them being in a different directory - Winnt32

There's also another installer executable inside the directory. The installer works, but it comes to a halt as it can't find the EULA.

So, to get around it, and make it actually work, this is what you might need to run.

-> Winnt32.exe /s:D:\I386 (assumingly the installer cdrom is drive D)

If you try to run it in NT 4.0 like I did, you'll need to issue the full path as cmd there for some reason doesn't wanna cd to it.

It would be something like this: D :\WINNT32\WINNT32.EXE /s:D\I386

Works like a charm in 86box. Sound (soundblaster 16 used) works, same with the display, despite it being a little laggy. I guess they were upping the requirements where an good ol' SiRGE would start to get laggy.

P.S. There will be some minor errors copying the files as it installs. Ignore them, as it doesn't corrupt the system or make it stop in any way.
