98SE Doesn't Detect A Dial Tone

edited November 2004 in Hardware
Crazy old lady across the street.
Wore out the tech support at Prodigy.
I tried to get her on this afternoon.
Internet Connection Wizard said it couldn't
detect a dial tone. The plugin works with
a phone.
Chances of a big power surge - extremely high.
Our transformer blew up. I had mine turned off.
The floppy drive doesn't work but I don't know if
that's new or not.

  • It could be the drivers.
  • Yeah. It could be some other things.
I really don't want to be over there and more,
she talks all the time. She got me to take a
support call from Prodigy. As soon as I started
talking to her she started hollering "Tell him this."
"Tell him that." I said let me talk to him Jo and
she left and about 10 seconds she was on the
phone line with me and said "Loyd, I really want
to know, is this on the same number I have now
    in the second tier?"
I said "Get off the damn phone Jo."

I told her we had three options to try if it's
software and she took number two and I
went back over with a boot disk and was going
    to: C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\SETUP.EXE
but the floopy drive wouldn't work. I went back
home and got my PE {Bart's PE Builder} and was
going to boot to the CD but stopped to try the
Internet Connection Wizard and with the bad power
I think the modem is blown. She's got some programs
she can't replace. Do you think it's worthwhile to run
    the restore disk?

    Why me?
    Oh well.

  • Ok, Sounds like the Modem and Floppy are dead. Replace them and it wouldn't hurt to reinstall windows. You can reinstall windows with out having to reformat. Use the Windows PE and delete the the file WIN.COM from C:\Windows Reboot and insert the Windows 98 CD (It should be bootable from the CD) and install Windows98 as useal. It won't mess with the registry and also it will keep everything on the startmenu and I think the desktop. Just have to install some drivers that the Windows 98 CD doesn't have.
  • It's a Hewlett Packard.
    466 MHZ Celeron
    64 MBS ram
    5 years old
She asked about taking it to the shop and
getting it fixed and I told her it wasn't
worth it. She didn't ask me and I didn't
volunteer. She doen't trust me I assume
'cause she's not bashful. She's unplugged
the phone line and is going to use the plug
for a phone and can still play her games
and can use her printer if she can figure
    out what's wrong with it.
I told her she'd be better off getting a new
one from Walmart Online for $300.
If she don't call me again I'm sure not
    going to call her.

  • Sounds like one of "them", I hate to say it but you might just want to avoid her and/or tell her to get the Walmart PC like yours.

    -Q
  • She is the Queen of "them" and would that I
could avoid her but it's impossible.
I told her to get a more expensive one than
mine because she needs a modem and I
want her to have a floppy drive and it comes
    with more ram.

  • Another call from the crazy old woman across the street.
"Would you mind coming over for a little while and see if you can
get my addresses for me? I've called Prodigy a dozen times and
    they can't help."
I said "You got your computer fixed?"
She said "Yeah it was a hundred and something dollars. They
put in a new something and another thing, I don't remember
    what."
She's trying to sign up for AOL for 5 dollars a month but she's
getting 3 months free of full service. She said she's called AOL
several times but they can't help her get her addresses.
I went over and looked in her address book at Prodigy and there
was only a couple. I checked Outlook Express and just some old
    mail from years ago.
Finally I remembered I'd gotten her e-mail addresses from her
address book a couple of years ago. I looked under Favorites
and there was "Jo's addresses". I clicked it and there was the
text file. I raised her font size so we could see it and she said
"That's it and leave it big like that, I'm going to print it."
I said "Jo, you printed it last time." and she said "Yeah but I don't
know what I did with it.
She printed it again. I e-mailed the list to me 'cause I know she
can't find it again and won't know what she did with the printed
    version.
    Why me?
