  • Its a form of a CAB file
  • This is a tool expand.exe, it's creating CAB archives.
  • I thought it was only for extracting.
  • C:\>expand.exe /?
Microsoft (R) File Expansion Utility Version 5.00.2134.1
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1990-1999. All rights reserved.

Expands one or more compressed files.

    EXPAND [-r] Source Destination
    EXPAND -r Source [Destination]
    EXPAND -D Source.cab [-F:Files]
    EXPAND Source.cab -F:Files Destination

    -r Rename expanded files.
-D Display list of files in source.
Source Source file specification. Wildcards may be used.
-F:Files Name of files to expand from a .CAB.
Destination Destination file | path specification.
    Destination may be a directory.
If Source is multiple files and -r is not specified,
    Destination must be a directory.

    C:\>

Doesnt say anything about creating CAB archives
  • makecab.exe is what i was looking for.
  • The website that has the Bart network boot disks has the tools for making CAB files.
  • i know winrar can open them but im not sure whether it can make them
  • I try using winrar to make a ZIP file and then i changed the extition to CAB and it kinda works. Instead of it uncompressing it it just copys the CAB file.
  • use powerarchiver, that can make cab files
i use that for school cos windows can read them with no 3rd party dtuff
  • Nooo! I've tried that! There are a few differences between PowArc's CAB format and Microsoft's. Better is to use makecab.exe
  • worked for me...
  • A slow but good method of 'inflating' the *.??_ files is to open winzip (from the start menu), then drag the compressed file into the winzip window. It will then get its proper extension. Now you can open it or drag it back out. Only problem, you have to do it file by file - slow.
  • why did you want to make compressed files anyways?
  • I think he wanted to either uncompress them or slipstream an SP or 2 in.
