edited December 2004 in Software
Hey
I have an old mac computer i recently fixed, and i was wondering if you can install Dos on it and override all mac setups and installations, because i'd like Windows 3.1 on it.. can i do that somehow?

  • no. macs run on a different archittecture....
  • As far as I know its impossible to install Windows / DOS on a macintosh :(
  • So not even if i can completely uninstall all of the drive i would not be able to?
  • DOS compability card in an older mac. Thats as close as you can get.
  • basically, its a square peg in a round hole......
  • Windows and DOS cannot run on a Macintosh system. Different PC architecture setup than the IBM compatible standard. Doesn't Apple have a DOS of their own though or were they always GUI?
  • AppleDos and ProDos on EARLY EARLY systems.

    I remember, my Apple IIc had Prodos 3 i think?

    i think, i was 5 when i used that system.
  • There was a version of Windows NT 4 if it's a powermac....
  • isnt there some sort of VMachine to emulate mac os in windows?
  • Yes, and vice versa.

    DOS card is about the closest... it's a totally different architecture and everything, as everyone's said.
  • No, you cant.
    But you may run DOS from a virtual machine, if needed.
  • I would find a dos compatibility card if you have one that will fit. I have some old powermac at school and a card that goes for it, but I had to buy some monitor cable, after doing that I still didn't get any video (I was using an old monitor from a IIgs, I guess it was too old to work... need a new mac monitor, or more cables to get a VGA port...)

    Yes, NT will install on PowerPC, but I still think it requires a dos compatibility card.
  • Microsoft says otherwise...
    RISC-BASED SYSTEMS

    * Workstation with Alpha AXP, MIPS R4x00, or PowerPC processor
    * 16 MB of memory
    * 110 MB of available hard-disk space
    * CD-ROM drive or access to a CD-ROM over a computer network
    * VGA or higher-resolution display adapter
    * Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
  • Do macs have VGA video? How about MS compatible mice.... all I have seen is 1 button... I would never use a 1 button in windows.
  • I don't think the Mac BIOSes are compatible. I think that MS means Non Mac PPCs.

  • Yeah like IBM PPCs
  • 16Mb is awful for NT 4.0
  • yeah... those requirements... they have to be NT 3.1 or something...
  • yeah... those requirements... they have to be NT 3.1 or something...
    Or at least NT 3.51...
  • NT 3.51 will run good on 16MB, but NT4 will swap comstantly, same with 32MB.
  • NT 3.51 works fine on 8Megs... NT 3.1 even on 4Megs..
    And NT 4.0 ---- 16 @ least...
  • NT 3.X works good on 8M RAM. NT4 should have at least 32M. It swaps alot under 16M or less.
  • I don't think it swapped much or at all on 64MB.
  • 64Mb is fine for NT4.
  • 64M can be alright for even 2k, not just Nt4
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • First, Tom, id depends on how you know Windows.
    If you don't know how to disable services or how to edit autostarts, then even 256Mb won't be enough for you.
    And if you tweak the system perfectly, it can run slightly on 64Megs...
  • 64 is HORRIBLE for 2k, my server had 2k with 64 and it was slow as shit, then i "borrowed" some ram from my brothers computer LOL
  • I tried 2000 on 64MB and it didn't even finish loading before the trial was up!

    PS. Mind you it didn't help that it was Server, and on a 486 :wink: ::D
  • this is a 233, it was fine once i added some
