  • I hate it too.
Remove it. You may also make it to show in add/remove components.
    Do the following:
    open with notepad C:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf
search fro the world "hide" and delete it everywhere you find it.
    100% tested!
After that it appears in system components.
  • I did everything you said and I removed the compnent, but the files are still there and windows won't let me delete them... What should I do?
  • reboot then try again
  • ah stop it might be you've removed only iconz from start menu, etc...
in system components... there should be two "Windows Messenger" lines...
    Like this...
Uncheck both of them... Note that it would appear only if you have edited your sysoc.inf

I see it listed twice. I removed the startmenu icons, but the otherone won't uncheck.

  • You can try to remove it with XPLite...
    1.5 works with SP2.
  • Uhhh....Maby he means the messenger service which can easily be removed by stopping the service.

I don't think he means MSN Messenger which *of cource* is going to popup onto the screen. That's what all messenger programs do.
  • I hate it to.
Here's a link to a fix that you can download. I haven't tried it yet
so if you do please let me know how it works out.

It works! It removed the service and the files! Thump, this is a good script to use. Your antivirus will tell you that the file is changing your registry, so let it.

<edit>Thanks trainer4. I've been waiting too long, I'm going for it.
If I see any problems arising later I'll try to remember to come back
    here and post about it.

Great! Please post back in a day or two with an update or
mail me at thumpnet@gmail.com - I was worrying about any
after affects. I hope it's fine.

  • if ur on about the windows messenger service then get a firewall, that stops them
  • It worked. I went Start > Run > msconfig > Startup
and it was there but it hadn't checked itself again. That's
    great.
I appreciate you being the guinea pig for this hack trainer4.
I'll post back if a problem later surfaces.

  • Or you can always disable to service.
  • SP2 does that by default although its fun to piss my brother off wiht

Service? If you mean "Messenger" service, you are wrong.
Messenger service does not belong to windows messenger, it is used to send messages on lan via net send.
  • I think everyone should stay away from the afore mentioned
Windows Messenger removal tool for a little while.

trainer4 should check this out first and let us know what he finds
out. Windows Messenger is gone but I had problems.

I got a trojan but don't know for sure where it came from.
Here's a link to the trojan information:

    Scroll down for the information.

  • I scanned the .vbs file with NOD32 and it said nothing.

  • I just scanned for viruses and my Norton said nothing. Maybe it's just you Thump...
  • You sure it's that file specifically that TM is getting excited about? It's something in that Indexing Services folder...

    -Q
  • haha it dosent bother me at all , i dont even use it,
  • Just disable it in the services manager. Or go in the registry and locate the registry to it and delete it. Then locate the useless files and manualy delete them. It's easyer then you think.
  • I don't even have windows messenger...... O_O
  • I don't need it, that's why I don't have it.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Yeah trainer4, I'm inclined to agree that it's just me.
I've been getting too many trojans lately and now that I've heard
from you I'm removing my objections to it.

And it does work really well.

I don't think screwing around in Windows like that is a good idea. You shouldn't touch any registry entries or files associated with services that come with Windows. Just disable the service, and be done with it.

i say dont touch the registry unless you absolutly have to cos u can reallyu mass things up
  • Are we sure we're all talking about the same thing? There are like 3 things that are called "Messenger" that could be the root of all this...

    -Q
  • so far as i gather Q, we're talking about Windows Messenger.... thump says its Msmsg in your msconfig or whatever.... i dont' think thier talking about the messenger service.... which causes those anoying spam messages.... but i think were getting a confusing off topic/on topic thing...... i'm confuzzled

anyways theres absoultly nothing wrong with editing the regestry, but Only if you know what your doing...
  • and make a backup before u do mess with it
  • i've never made a back up, probably stupid i know, but when i do mess with the regestry i know exactly what i'm doing... i trust myself enough to not need a back up
