  • er... Intel has had a 64bit CPU for ages.

Yeah but BOD look at it.... it's a 64-bit Pentium 4. Or... EM.. maybe it emulates a 64-bit environment... I'm not sure what to believe yet.... I have to look into it more.
  • Intel starts shipping 64bits
  • He means as a seperate piece of hardware not included with a brand-name PC.
  • I don't think this is a 64bit cpu.... It's a prescott core... And.. I can't find that 630 model number anywhere on intel's site... I think this processor is falsely advertised.
  • Itanium has been out for a while, thats 64bit
  • I see... so it is a pentium 4 with some 64-bit emulation...

Also released P4 3.73 EE's which double as pool water heaters for up to 20,000 gallons.

Well I've been reading up on this new cpu and looking at it's benchmarks compared to AMD cpus. It does seem to be a step forward for intel, though if all you care about is gaming then the AMD 64 is better. (Though I play games with my P4 @ 2.8 [I think it would be a 520 on the new model system] and they run just fine, Doom 3 ran just fine at higher quality settings (which scares the hell out of you till you become desensitized to it), and I play UT 2004 constantly with it. Though if I'm aiming for killing sprees and not vivid, semi-realistic (demons...) quality... I drop all settings as low as I can.
  • Nice, but still, the Presscott core.... Anyway, I'd take an Intel for video encoding. :)

    I wish they made 64bit Pentium-Ms.
  • Yes, it did seem that the pentium 4 line surpases the AMD line in terms of video and sound encoding. I always thought my system did a nice job on both. And.... perhaps they will tweak the Pentium M line.
What core is in the Pentium M anyways? I don't know too much about that one other then it's used in mobile computing.
  • Pentium M is more or less a Pentium III with a higher clock speed and more cache.

  • Yeah I thought it was something along the lines of a pentium 3. A bit interesting to see it outpreform some of the pentium 4 cpus...
  • That's not too odd to me...

I'd still prefer an AMD over an Intel. Maybe if I did so much video editing that I had a dedicated video editing machine, but I don't see that happening. Most people would probably get a Mac if they were that into it.
  • I am really liking the Look of the Pentium 4 6XX Processors and that Pentium 4 3.73 GHZ Extreme Edition just makes me (drool) .

Pentium M is a revamped P6 core. It uses the P4's bus technology, has a huge cache, etc.

Anyway, you all are a bunch of newbs.

Yes, Intel has had a 64-bit CPU for ages. It's called the Itanium. It was and is an expensive flop, and it uses a totally different instruction set (IA64) than x86 CPUs. The Itanium emulates x86, and it sucks at it -- why it hasn't been adopted like crazy.

This recent thing they've just released is a Prescott core with 2 MB of L2 and AMD's x86-64 technology. Yes, Intel is now the one copying AMD.

The thing is no one really knows yet how Intel's 64-bit compares to AMD's 64-bit.
    A P6 doesn't even exist...

    Here we go again ::roll:

It's the generation, not the marketing #.
  • Shit, you are more retarded than you look aren't you?

  • Judging by the time it was posted, Yes.
  • I thought he was talking about the processor P6, like the P4, P3, etc.
  • Yea it is a bit confusing. Infact if I hadn't heard of then previously I'd've probably fallen into that state of mind aswell.

  • Speaking of P6... I need to get my hands on a Pentium Pro sooon!!!
  • I've got on, but no system to put it in. That'd be the BEST old machine EVER.
