CD burning problem

edited March 2005 in Software
ok i have no idea whats going on.... i put in one of my back up cd's and proceeded to do my weekly back up.... when XP gave me this error:
XP wrote:
cannot copy [file]: files on this cd are read-only. you can still copy

new files to this writable CD, which will replace files already on the disc.

so what the hell?!

Addintional Notes:

-this CD is CD-RW
-i've done this many times before without a problem
-does this on both of my cd burnners
-does this with all of the CD-RW's
-i am running windows XP home ( :( )

Isn't she reffurring (sp) to the drive itself?
  • in retrospect, since it does it with all of bluesun's cd burners, it could be a driver problem...maybe

anyways, could be a dodgy batch of CD's I suppose

That could be, I just had a batch that were all bad
and the gold paint was coming off one of them. I
don't know if she tried more than one batch or not.

Maybe BlueSun could return to a known good time
    with a restore point.

  • If both of the CD burners are in the same PC, I'd try reinstalling Nero or using something else.

That's about all I can think of.
  • Check the cable, my machine wouldnt boot becuase the cable was tangled
  • i'm gonna try again tonight, i am hoping its just a glitch with either the computer itself or windows (drivers, etc )

but it did this with all the cds, it did it on both burners, and these cd's worked fine before......
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.

Errr ... you might want to format the CD-RW?

why would i do that? your supposed to be able to add to it not erase it and then reburn everything.....
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • That's what I'm trying to figure out. :-S

Does Windows somehow not let you write, or does it work?
  • Its probably on multisession?

When you add files of the same name, you over-write the other files. That's what Windows is trying to tell you.

    Why is that so difficult?

duh.. because thier not of the same name? thier new files that are nto already on the CD and it does no matter what i try to burn or which cd or burner i use.......

    why is that so difficult?
  • I hope it's my fault 'cause if it is it should be easy
    to fix.
If you ran "SERVICES.MSC" lately you need to run it
again and make sure that your IMAPI CD-Burning
    COM Service is not disabled.
I can't swear that's it but it seems likely.

If you haven't run SERVICES.MSC then maybe
save the file below to your hard drive. Navigate to
where you saved it and double click the file. A
confirmation dialog will appear when the script is
done. You may need to reboot for the change to
    take effect.

  • no changes have been made to the currently runnign services..... no chanegs had been made at all
  • Perhaps the cds are "full" from the way they were burnt. Using multiple sessions on a cd will reduce the amount of actual writable space available (am I right?). If so you might want to copy all the files off the cd, format the cd, then burn them back on, and you may have more room for new files.
  • -does this with all of the CD-RW's
  • yes thats not the problem, and yes wingzeroismine that does happen, it happened with my pictures back up that i had been adding to since i got a cd burner...... it was easy to erse the CD-RW and copy back everything......

however this can not be the problem since it does this with all of them
  • Do you have a Knoppix or Damn Small Linux CD? See if you can burn with one of those.
  • Maybe you try using other stuff than Nero...?
  • i haven't tried again yet, when i did this i just wanted to copy a few thigns before i went to bed, so i didn't even try nero, or anythign else..... i will probably try tonight
  • cd-rw are fine and dandy .. but the only real purpuse for cdrw is to put somthing on it for a bit .. maby an iso you burned .. or somthing etc.. after that erase it.. nero does the fine, incd by nero is good for that purpuse with explorer intergration .. when you burned that cd make sure you checked multisession disk or you will come by some errors when adding new files to the cd ..

im not a windows fan .. actually i hate windows alot .. although NT4 has a special place in my heart.. lol
