What should I get on a limited budget.

A friend of mine brought their PC to me. It's fried. Literally, while they were using it, the heatsink clips fell off, and it fried up in a heartbeat. It was an old 2ghz P4 from 2001.

I'm thinking about putting in one of the orignal Athlon 64's. He doesn't have that much money to spend, range between $75 to $110 for board/cpu. Keeping it as low as possiable, post some possiable possibilities for a good CPU/board combo. You can use tigerdirect and newegg. I will also be shopping around at Frys tomorrow for one aswell.

Echo adragon's comment: The CPU is definately gone, but is anything else damaged? If so, can you get a new processor (And better heatsink!) for that price?

I think being a P4 it would have metled a little at first and then blownup inside the box, damaging the clips and surrounding area in a blueish powder. Am I right? really your going to have to look for stuff about the same age in that budget range. Even then older stuff is getting more expensive by the week.

Even though PC Chips aren't the best, it'd probably just be good enough anyways.

Plus I wouldn't get a Sempron, not enough L2. :P

I haven't looked yet but I got a PCChips board and haven't got it
working yet. I need an extension for the rear case fan 'cause
they put the header for it so far away from the back. I don't
know where I could find one so I'm probably going to have
Curly splice in some wire between connectinns tomorrow
afternoon.

You can't get much with $75. As we discussed in IRC, if you want a decent CPU, you have to spend a wee bit.

For a cheap CPU I'd choose the Celeron D, it doesn't have but
512 K of cache but otherwise it's a great deal. It was on sale
for $39.98 after a rebate.

Go Socket 754 A64 3000+ or above... Everything else should come cheap.

You could get a 754, but that'd screw him for upgradeability.

Although, if he doesn't need/care about that, it would be a good idea.

I'd have to agree on the PCChips recommended...

Is it an OEM case? Like Dell, Compaq, HP whatever? If so, lets hope you don't run into a problem with case connections, etc...
