Windows 3.1 time?

edited April 2017 in Software
I got a new laptop today (yay!) it's a toshiba t2100 I got for $25.

this time the floppy drive works, I have already formatted the hard drive and installed MS-DOS 6.22.

Someone did max out the laptop though, it has 20mb of ram and a 250mb hard drive, according to my research it came with like 4mb of ram and I'm not sure about the hard drive but probably less. But hey, that's a good thing.

All that's left to do is download the 3.1 floppy's from here and install!

FUCK YEAH WINDOWS 3.1 BEST OS EVER!!!!

  • Good find.

    Dont forget skifree lol
  • Also don't forget to install chips challenge. Lol
  • The otherday I was thinking about installing Win3.x for giggles then it hit me. The only time I used Win3x was for Ski free, chips challenge and kill barney. Other then that I was at the good'ol DOS prompt and DOS Shell.
  • I always used to like Jetpack.

    game4.gif

Part of me wonders if we should mirror that here in case anything ever happens to their site. This game was awesome.
  • I had never heard of that game, it reminds me a lot of Apogee games like Crystal Caves.
  • It does look like a crystal caves clone. I tried jetpack 2 beta and it kinda feels like commander keen lol.
  • I just noticed I murdered the spelling of "Windows" lol.

So I should find jetpack, ski free and chips challenge?
  • I'd suggest downloading the Microsoft Entertainment Packs.
Speaking of which, I just realized we don't have that to download in our library anymore. Guess I'll add it today.

    I LOVED THOSE!

yo, tell me when you add it and link me please. :D
  • I just happened to upload all four entertainment packs, good timing!

I can't seem to find it in the library.

I can't seem to find it in the library.
An admin has to approve the uploads. I think we need to make that clear on the uploads page. I don't approve anything until I test things and I can't for the next week.
  • I took a quick look at the MS Entertainment Pack images in the upload que, these are not original disk dumps - they were created by Winimage. Normally I don't consider that a major issue, but all of the timestamps on the Entertainment Pack 1 files are wrong.

Does anyone have an unmodified image? These disks aren't exactly rare.

Another odd thing, the picture on this old ebay auction shows two 720k disks: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsoft-Enter ... 7675.l2557
But it doesn't look like there is enough stuff for two disks. :?
  • That's probably Volume 1 (was it numbered from the start?)

Correct, the original 1990 release was unnumbered. Retroactively it is referred to as "1" to eliminate ambiguity.

Annoyingly, every Google search for a fresh copy turns up the exact same copy with the same bad file dates. How to these people even manage to mess those up?

I'm guessing the timestamps actually matter for some reason?
  • It helps show that the software has not been edited or altered by a user or virus. Yes, someone could technically fake the date, but a casual user wouldn't. Modern viruses would retain the date, but old DOS/Win 3.x ones usually weren't that careful.

In general, It also helps identify issues like INI files that a previous user edited, or sample/template documents a user may have resaved. That is important when someone may have left undesirable settings or old personal information that need to be cleaned before posting.

Also in many cases the date stamp is the only way to determine the exact version of a program.

I'm suspecting something in this entertainment pack 1 has been omitted. It may just be a later re-release, but again unmodified date stamps would help determine that.

Although, it did install and run fine. And after all that I should clarify I am happy to have working software in any state. If there are no cleaner copies to be found off hand, I will just make a note that it needs a redump from original media.
  • I admit Volume 1 that I uploaded here was strange to have 1998 timestamps, though I tested it some time ago and experienced no issues. It's been the only copy I could find, and finding the original floppies is exceptionally hard in Australia. I uploaded it as a floppy image for convenience to install in a virtual machine.

The other volumes I uploaded appear to be more legit with the dates:
    Volume 2 - 12/09/1991
Volume 3 - 12/09/1991 (was this released at the same time?)
    Volume 4 - 7/09/1992

If I upload anything else, I'll add the file dates if it helps.

I really didn't know about Jetpack.

    @SomeGuy , @ampharos

I was also supprised that non Geniune dump of MS EP1 ~ EP4, and BEP a few years ago.
All 3.5" types are dumped as MS Guniune. Only 5.25" media are not dumped.
  • A friend of mine's been buying proper copies of the WEP disks on 5.25, so...

I guess this is original release of MS WEP 5.25" package in 1990, not in 1991 or later.
