Win 3.1 installation

edited December 2004 in Software
I have installed Win 3.1 several times but now I was sick of all the other files and wanted a clean install. So I formatted my hard drive in my laptop using Dos bootdisk 6.22 (format c:). Then my problems started.

1. If I try just to install 3.1 it doesn't load only sais "non system disk or disk error".
2. If I install DOS 6.2 first, and then 3.1 it will only boot to dos and I have to type "win" first. Its irritating so how do I change mu autoexec and other files in order to boot directly to Windows? please help.

  • put the following line in your autoexec.bat (without the quotes)

    "c:\windows\win.com"
  • Where in Autoexec.bat? :P and in wich case ( I guess the DOS 6.2 case, but just wanna be sure)
  • the last line of code should be "C:\windows\win.com", and you should add it after you installed DOS 6.22. Win3.1 is a shell for MS-dos, and cannot run without it.
  • Install DOS 6.22 (Or just 6.2).
    Install Windows 3.1
    In DOS, EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
At the end of your AUTOEXEC.BAT, C:\WINDOWS\WIN
    Alt F > Exit, Save
    Restart the system.

It should load into DOS and then Windows.

PS. Windows 3.1 is NOT an operating system, just a shell to DOS. This is why you have to install DOS 1st.
  • By the way, Windows 9x is not an OS too. It is a shell which comes together with ms-dos
  • Or you could try 'sysedit' and open AUTOEXEC.BAT from there.
  • is there sysedit in win31?
  • OK, here what you do.

    Install MS-DOS 6.X

type "edit config.sys" when it boots.

Then add the line "device=himem.sys" it should already be there though.

Then install Windows 3.1X Let it make modifacations to your CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT files. It should work fine. If now, add the line "C:\windows\win" to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file at the very bottom
  • Yea... SYSEDIT is in Win31.
  • yeah, it is
  • I am installing Windows 3.1 now... :)
Damn, I must make backup copies of the disks! :P
  • Heres what to do.
Set the BIOS to boot from the floppy and have the frist Disk of DOS in the drive.
Let the laptop boot and the DOS installer should start on bootup. If you need to reformat just exit the installer and run FORMAT C: /Q or if it is using a diffrent FileSystem then run FDISK and delete the old partition and create a new partition. Reboot the PC and let it go into the installer and the installer will ask to format. After it formats I think it asks to reboot. If it does then do so. If not contnue the installation. After you install DOS boot off the frist disk again and exit the installer and run this command FDISK /MBR. Reboot the laptop and go in the BIOS and select IDE-0 or what ever is listed for your praimary drive. Save the info in the BIOS and boot the laptop as normal and DOS should load correctly. If you have a CD-ROM or mouse go ahead and install the DOS drivers. Before you install Windows 3.x make a directory called WIN. Heres the command to make a directory, MKDIR WIN
Now copy all of the floppy disk or CD files of Windows 3.x into that directory and install Windows 3.x from there. This really helps on furture stuff and help on not dealing with disk swaping. After you install Windows you can open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in NOTEPAD in windows and add this line to the bottom. C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM
  • TCP, please learn what the <Return> key is and how to use it.

  • Yeaaa... may wanna put a few enters in there LOL, Whenever Im doing something LOONG, I put several enters... makes it easier to read.
  • Ok, thanks guys! It's done and everything works! thnks!
  • The easiest way to make win31 startup with the computer is to simply add the "WIN" at the bottom of C:\autoexec.bat.
  • uh...
    1. this is SO old
    2. Thats just what they told me to do...
  • HeH, I wonder who he is anyway. He's almost like "."!

    -Q
  • when you boot the computer and your at the c:\ type in edit autoexec.bat when you in the arrow down to a blank line type in c:\windows\win.ini

and the save the new autoexec file and reboot the computer, it should boot right into windows for you
  • Shit, I KNOW!
