Windows XP Machine

edited June 2016 in Software
Hello! I am new to WinWorld and WinBoard and i was wondering about if i can do anything to make my Windows XP machine run faster and make it more tolerable. I just installed it a few days ago, and I was wondering about some tricks i can use! This is my first post on WinBoards, and I need some help with my new station. Thanks!

P.S. I know that you dont carry Windows XP in your downloads, but is it still allowed to ask for some help about it?

  • People here regularly do ask questions about using Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, MacOS X, Linux, etc so that is fair enough.

But do keep in mind that there are probably better forums to ask questions about newer OSes. But often these question are to the end of running more vintage-related software.

Hopefully you have done at least some research on the web about your problem, but being a general problem perhaps some people here have general solutions.

You will need to provide more details about your specific machine (model, make, hard drive size, CPU power, etc)

Ok, Thanks for the information! I am new, so i will keep it in mind! I reinstalled Windows XP on my old Dell Optiplex 360 using all of the standard hardware, minus a new 430W power supply, and i just wanted to see if anyone had tips or some programs to keep my machine in shape! I right now use OS X and I have been drifting away from Microsoft after Windows 10. I have been doing research and i learned that Adobe CS2 is free, so i will install it on the machine. Thanks again for the info, and I am now going to look up some more things that i can do.
  • For performance?

I'd increase the Page File to 4096mb, and 2048mb for initial size or more. Start>Right click computer > Properties > Performance > Advanced

Install the unofficial Service Pack 4. Can be found on MajorGeeks and SoftwareInformer.

Install CCleaner, and Driver Booster, Make sure you clean the registry, and keep drivers updated.

Not much else other than disabling visual styles, increase the RAM amount or a newer processor.

Don't, just... please don't install this pointless crap.

IMHO, a 2GB page file is way too much, and it puts a lot of wear on drives.

CCleaner isn't pointless, it is actually useful for maintaining system performance. Keeps pointless files from clogging your drive, and helps keep your hard drive clean.

Using the check disk tool and the defragging tool on your hard disk can help in boosting performance drive wise. Unless it is a solid state drive, then it is not recommended to defrag your hard disk... As for cpu, just try to use efficient apps, you could also add more ram to your computer to increase the amount of memory. Therefore decreasing the amount on your pagefile.sys.

I'm agree for CCleaner isn't pointless because I actually use it. DriverBooster and most hyper-claimed (esp.from Uniblue) tweakers mostly are just pointless program. To date, I'm fine with Auslogics Disk Defrag becuse it's faster than Windows's defrag and don't need much free space.
  • MyDefrag is cool. I wonder if it's still around, since it's totally possible to fine-tweak your defrag with it.

pe~ I guess it's not maintained anymore, but it's still very usable.
  • Wow, so many replies! Thank you for letting me know about this software, I will give them a try! I was thinking that i could upgrade it to 7, since a friend of mine gave me a install disk, so I will see about that. Thanks again!
