Comprehensive photo gallery of spreadsheets

Stumbled up on a web site today that has an extensive photo gallery of different early spreadsheets.

Not the friendliest web site layout, but it has lots of good box pictures. There are plenty here that we do not yet have on Winworld.

All I can think of is some intern spent a whole summer cataloging all of that.

And SomeGuy had to bust a sweat putting that awesome clickable list together.

Nice find. Interesting how Multiplan was available on a chip.

When filtering by year, it's easy to see how there was plenty of choice during the 1980s and into the early 90s. Roughly by the time Windows 3.1 came out, you're left pretty much with a small handful of vendors.

For completeness considering they went up to 2016, the more recent versions of Quattro Pro were missed.

Hi, everyone. I just found this post.

I'm the owner of the collection, and I'm glad you found it interesting. We actually have about twice the items from that list (800 or so), and we're in the process of updating the catalog. Feel free to check in every so often to see new items.

By the way, if you have any items that are not on there, we'd love to add them to the collection!

Re: Multiplan, actually it was the program with the highest portability in history - close to 50 different architectures. We have about 30!

Thanks for stopping in! That is a very impressive collection. You can view a list of all spreadsheet applications on Winworld by searching by tag: https://winworldpc.com/library/applications/tag-spreadsheet But as you can see, our collection is no where as big.

Unfortunately small and obscure platforms get overlooked and forgotten. Many are not even mentioned in periodicals of the day. Please do document all you come across!

Even in the IBM PC compatible world, there were a lot of spreadsheets with short lives that are not included in the list.

Surpass (from Surpass Software) Better known after being bought by Borland to become the basis for Quattro Pro.
Quattro (non-Pro): roughly on the market for a year before being replaced by Quattro Pro

Silk (from Daybreak Technologies): appeared in 1987, got good reviews, Chapter 11 in 1988

Visi-On Calc: Everyone remembers this.

Context MBA: Early integrated package using UCSD Pascal famous for being absurdly slow.

Smart Spreadsheet (part of Smart System from Innovative Software then Informix); Mini computer integrated software that got ported to DOS. Wingz got all the notice though.

Zen Calc (from Knowledge Engineering): A fairly minimal one that survived by selling copies to the fellow Austin based Compuadd as pack ins for computer sales.

Visi-On Calc: Everyone remembers this

No they don't, they confuse it with VisiCalc

Actually we do have Visi On Calc, but it is lumped under the Visi-On operating system. I probably need to reorganize that.

Hmmm, I just realized that the search tool can not show spread sheets that are part of an operating system, or system because items categorized as OS or System Tool can not have a tag.

Visi On Calc was completely unrelated to VisiCalc but was so confusing they later were forced to re-name it as Visi On Plan. I have a disk image of Visi On Plan sitting around here, but I never could get it to work (and it has a boot sector virus), so I have not posted that.

I think we have "Quattro", but it is lumped under "Quattro Pro".

The quest for small spreadsheets can be even more confusing because some OEMs licensed a product and then bundled it with their systems under another name. For example Eagle Computer licensed UltraCalc but released a modified version with their systems branded as EagleCalc. (Wich is also on the site, but not listed in the search)

Thanks for all the comments. We are in the process of updating the catalog - hopefully it will be ready in the next few days. In the meantime, here is a picture of some (not all) the items

We haven't found a better way to display the many items that are not in boxes, which we have in sleeves (see the bottom shelf) and are consequently difficult to appreciate.

If anyone has a special interest in the topic and you would like to chat, happy to do so.

@SomeGuy I picked up on your original links to the images is a little out of whack. For example, clicking on Lisa Calc I get directed to iWork '08 instead. Probably the migration to the new forum did that.

It would be nice to have a shelf like that, although I don't have enough to dedicate that much space to a specific genre.
