There is no wired network in my home, the only Ethernet cables are one from the antenna to the wifi router and another that goes to a desktop in the basement.

This poses problems for me as I like to play with old computers which often can't support wifi and wifi cards cost money and the older the operating system, the harder to find drivers.

I recently got in my possession a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 laptop designed for and running Windows 98 Second Edition. Pentium 3 @ 700mhz, 20gig HD, 128mb ram upgraded (probably maxed) to 512mb.
I really wanted to get this beauty online. (As some of you already know).

I ended up buying a wireless access point which had multiple modes, I set it up as a client adapter, so it connects to my wifi and transmits the signal to wired machines through Ethernet, and well it works!

I'm a f**ing genius!

So you purchased another router and set it up as a wifi extender to convert the signal back into ethernet?

Ever hear of ethernet switches and routers? Or those fancy powerline adapters?

Well, sometimes you just can't run cables where you need. I think that was the whole point.

I tried the powerline adapters, they did not work, so I returned them and got this, exact same price, weirdly enough, but this method works.

THERE IS NO WIRED NETWORK IN MY HOME

Exactly. I can't just rip open my father's walls and start running CAT5e cables everywhere. :P

Which brand did you use? I can't use wireless in my home as my walls are solid concrete and rebar, blocking any signal penetration(including cellular).
Powerline adapters work for me. However, they do depend on how your home's power is wired, so...

Either way, whacky method. Give you credit, it works.

yeah the modem and wifi router is in the basement and my room is on the second floor, so entirely different circuits, that's probably why it did not work.

I don't find this method wacky though, there is a mode specifically for this, though it gives connecting a PS3/XBOX as an example. I have WiFi, I got something to catch the signal and to put the signal down an Ethernet cable for me.

That's why it didn't work. Personally I use power point Ethernet and it works beautifully - mine are NetComm 600Mbps with gigabit Ethernet. Fortunately I can use one in the shed that's connected via underground power to the house.

If I was to change your setup in any way, I'd buy some velcro to keep it in place and would last longer I would think.
