Older systems

If any of you were to build an older machine around 1997, that for the time would have been considered THE system to have, what would it be?

Comment, questions and general info are welcome. :)

  • er... what now? You want to know what hardware?

    I would do something like...

    Pentium MMX 166-233Mhz
64-128M RAM (I know SDR isnt cheap right now, so an EDO mainbaord is OK)
    2GB-6GB Hard Disk
    CD-ROM
    2M SVGA Card
And and a good ol copy of Winsows.

Heres a setup thatllc cost a little bit more

    Pentium II 233-300Mhz
64M-256M RAM (Yes, they're are EDO Slot1 Mainboards)
    3GB-10GB HArd Disk
    CD-Rom
    2M SVGA Card
  • Dual Voodoo2 12mb, With a Matrox AGP card, A SoundBlaster AWE64Gold, SCSI writer and harddisk, and a 1st generation DVD player with Hardware MPEG Decoder Card.

  • You want to know what hardware?

    Yes, that and the os.
  • I want i486DX4-100MHz/64Mb RAM/2Gb HDD/2Mb SVGA
  • Then get one. I see DX-4's all the time.
  • i have DX-4 but I need more RAM! It is only 8Mb
  • Pentium 2 300mhz, 64 mb ram, 4 mb agp card, cd-rom drive... heheh this was my p2 old specs.
  • My Pentium's II's are better LOL

    Pentium 400Mhz, 384M RAM, 8M AGP Video, 10GB HD, then the others a Pentium II 300Mhz, 2 3GB Hard Disks, 256M RAM.
  • well, this wasn't upgraded... i got it AS IS... off of some small place that sold computers. Or did someone give it to me? Dont' remember.
  • I had a p1 200mhz mmx, with 128mb sdram, some 4mb sis agp video, sound blaster awe 64, 6mb maxtor hdd, and winnt 4

EDIT: i used to think that was lightning fast!
  • I got an MMX with NT4

    Pentium MMX @ 233Mhz
    96M SDR (was 128)
    2X 1.5GB IDE HArd Disk
    S3/Trio 2M SVGA PCI Card

I think it may have an AGP port on the side of the daughterboard(never looked :-) ) Compaq has a driver for AGP cards for the DP4000 MMX boards, so this one may have AGP.
  • "The PII" or "Hall's Machine".

    -Q
  • Oooooh, you want to know what would be "high-tech" for 1997.

I thought you wanted to build one and needed to know what parts...

In that case, this would be bitch for that time period

    AMD K6-II 300Mhz
    256Mb RAM
    2X IDE 6GB Hard Disks
    2X IDE 6GB HArd Disks
SCSI DVD-ROM with PCI Decoder card
ATI all in wonder 8Mb AGP 2X w/ TV Tuner Card
    Sound Blaster Audicy

Now thats nice for 1997, may be some inaccurite like the processor and maby the hard drives. I know 256M has been around since late 486's. I seen a Pentium 90Mhz with 256M, but it was a server with ECC RAM
  • Well I had a pretty good system in 97 but i'll list on what I wanted to add to it.

    Heres what it had.
    AMD K5 166MHz
    64MB ram
    DSI 56K modem
    3com 509b 10mb nic
Dual Voodoo2 8MB vram on each one. (Had the ribbon cable connected to it so it gave me 16MB of vram if I only used one at a time)
    SoundBlatser AWE 32
    4GB HD
    24X CD-ROM

Heres what I wish I could of had.

ATX Style mobo (As long as it supported the AMD K6/2)
AMD K6/2 at 400MHz (Damn CPU cost around 300 bucks)
    128MB ram
    RealTek 10/100
    SoundBlaster AWE 64
    6.4GB HD
    32x CD-ROM
    1.44MB Floppy
  • 3Com's 509B is a 10/100M NIC, I got one. Its an Etherlink XL / Fast Ethernet or whatever.
  • AMD K6-II 300Mhz
    256Mb RAM
    2X IDE 6GB Hard Disks
    2X IDE 6GB HArd Disks
SCSI DVD-ROM with PCI Decoder card
ATI all in wonder 8Mb AGP 2X w/ TV Tuner Card
    Sound Blaster Audicy

Yeah I would like to have that computer even now!
  • 3Com's 509B is a 10/100M NIC, I got one. Its an Etherlink XL / Fast Ethernet or whatever.
    nope, 509b is a 3Com Etherlink III, which is a 10mbit. The 100mbit is a 3C905, or FastEtherlink XL
    I have a 3Com Etherlink III ISA COMBO, and a 3Com 3c905 TX-M Managable.
  • WTF, I SWORE he said 905 and I wrote 905.

    ...forum coverups.....
  • My Pc is from about 7yrs old,
    pentium pro 200mhz, 80mb EDO, 6gb HDD
but Win2k is way better than 95 on this lol!
  • LOL, Windows 2000 is better than 95 ANY day
  • Yeah. Any version of NT 4 or above is better than 9x/ME any day....
  • Your right on that!

    -Q
  • I have never used Win9x on real pc.
  • Only from Virtual PC.

    That just makes 9x worst...

NT 3.51 is better than WFW!
  • Oh and 3.51 is waaaay better than WFW and 95!
  • nt3.51 works sucks on 8mb RAM. but 3.1 is OK.
