The MS-DOS versions that will work on hypervisors/IBM PC/compatibles

edited May 2020 in Software

I'm new here. My first post will be about what is mentioned in the title.

1.25:
Columbia Data Products (oldest build date, in 1982)
Compaq
Corona Data Systems
Zenith Z-100 PC

2.11 (2.0x and 2.10 don't work):
AT&T PC 6300
Bull Mircal
Compaq
Corona Data Systems
Epson
Data General
ITT XTRA
Kaypro 2000
Leading Edge
NCR
Olivetti
Wyse 1100
Zenith Z-100 PC

2.12?:
Compaq

Those versions are usable on hypervisors/the IBM PC/100% compatibles.

  • What emulators/hypervisors did you test? Did you test with real hardware?

  • I tested with VirtualBox.

I'm not too surprised. These days Virtualbox supports disk sizes and types dyanmically; meaning if you throw a 360k image at it, it pretends to be a 360k drive; throw a 1.44mb image at it, it pretends to be a 1.44mb drive, etc.

It doesn't work (consistently) for 2.88mb images, though.

But as long as VirtualBox can sniff out the disk format, booting an older dos shouldn't be much of a problem for it. Now getting something like 2.x to a hardrive might be a challenge, of course...
