Grrr! So I installed XP and SP2 because Fish wanted to know what A64s did. So I installed it and try to use it and it's worse then a Qed up 2000! TCPIP.SYS only allows 10 connexions @ a time so Aza and Freenet are screwed unless I do a Q Special on XP which I installed so I WOULDN'T have to. And DEP/NX crashes AIM and a ton of other stuff! And I disable a bunch of unneeded crap and now about

  • at least the port fowarding works properly
  • That's what routers are for, or @ least I find them handy for that.

  • if i had a router i would use it

  • when u say 10 connnections do u mean, 10 ports fowarded? cos i swear i have more than that
  • No I do NOT mean that. Connections and ports forwarded are NOT the same thing @ ALL!

Connections are TCP and UCP, well connections. Do a netstant from the DOS prompt and see them.

Ports forwarded, well you know about them.

  • hmmm...

  • Right, all of the 'ESTABLISHED' ones are (active) connections.

  • once again windows XPlosion fucks up again. security my ass. coveinece my ass.
2000 rocks anyways. xp SP1 is slow as shit.
  • See, I dont go disabling tons of things, and I can keep windows working for a looong time. Why? Because I dont like to ruin my OS and need to reinstall, and re-customize it. I just disable the services I know I wont be using, change the theme to classic, the start menu to classic, set my wallpaper and defauly browser and I'm set. DEP doesnt give me any problems. And I DID see that the 10 connections things doing stuff, Im still looking for a way around it.
  • Well I'm gonna be in SuSE 9.1 soon so :fist: @ XP!

    -Q
  • XP Sucks... I know, you can tune it to be like 2000, to be more faster and secure... but isn't it much easier to install 2000 or 2003??
  • i dont have any probelms with XP SP2, stuff works now
  • Or, as I am about to do, install Linux!

    -Q
  • Don't tell me that you won't get hacked by a random "advanced user" on the net!!
  • Rephrase that, I didn't understand...

    -Q
  • Everyone who is an advanced internet user, who has a port scanner and a terminal can get full access to someone's WIndowsXP and hack it. Because it's insecure...
  • you could hack anything if you tried, its whether someone thinks you have anything worth hacking for
  • Linux is almost impossible to hack...that's proved.
  • Well, provided the Administ (I) don't do something stpuid like leave the root passwd blank or fail to update it.

    -Q
  • if someone thinks that you have something worth stealing, tehn they will
  • How they will? It's almost impossible.
  • they'll try, probably not get anywhere though
  • Easy, hire a few retired NKVD officers and torture the root passwd out of me.

    -Q
  • i dont know what my password is, just the pattern of keys on the kbd
  • I don't know what my root passwd is yet, I haven't chosen it.

  • It's not a "maximum of 10 connections" that SP2 enforces. Here's a quote from Microsoft:
The TCP/IP stack now limits the number of simultaneous incomplete outbound TCP connection attempts. After the limit has been reached, subsequent connection attempts are put in a queue and will be resolved at a fixed rate. Under normal operation, when applications are connecting to available hosts at valid IP addresses, no connection rate-limiting will occur. When it does occur, a new event, with ID 4226, appears in the system
  • I'd just like to add ...

The reason Microsoft implemented that limit was because 10+ simulataneous incomplete outbound connections = port scanning 99% of the time. Limiting these connections to 10 severely slows down people with their port scanners, not to mention any future worms that spread by randomly scanning IP segments.

I believe I mentioned that in here somewhere - maybe not. But I did notice that MyNapster and Shareaza can no longer connect. But it definately will slow down the scanners, and worms, since they can only make 10 connections at a time, but its still a pain in the ass not being able to use some filesharing networks. It even makes BitTorrent have trouble. Im going to look for a hacked TCPIP.SYS that will allow you to make more than 10 connections.
