  • OK. this is what I did:

    1. Got rid of the DDO and made an 8 GB partition on my HDD and formatted it.
    2. I took out everything but the video card and one 128MB RAM chip.
    3. I insert and boot from the Windows NT disc.
    4. about 30 seconds later, the setup initialization fails with no memory dump, so I haven't a clue what the problem was.
    5. I take out the RAM chip and I replace it with the other chip thinking it is a memory problem.
    6. I start up with the disc again, and same problem occurs.

I gave up, and I tried the win2k disc and the same problem happens. I try the WinXP discs. I have 3 of them - error free. But, they all have the same problem - file ntfs.sys is corrupt even though they are not. Is this a clue in anything?
  • Is this an OEM or custom built system?
  • what? Windows XP? It is Windows XP with SP2 integrated. So I would assume custom? It works fine on my bro's pc, but all three discs say the same thing...
  • no your pc?

is it a dell, sony, hp, compaq, alienware, ibm, etc... or did you build it yourself?
  • custom built... why?
  • thinking if you can get support or sumfin take it in to your manufactuer dealer and have them try to install it.

BUT since its custom built you can rule out that option.
  • And have you tried updating BIOS?
  • is youyr cd drive ok? it may not bin reading the disc prpoperly
  • OK... to answer everyone's questions...

    1. I did a BIOS upgrade twice.
    2. My CD-ROM drive works perfectly.
  • Can you boot from the CD drive (Is the BIOS capable, etc, etc)?

    -Q
  • yes... why?
  • Try installing ReactOS just to see if installs. That should give a possilble indication of whether or not it's NT, or hardware. If nothing else it would be fun to try (Just make sure there's nothing on the drive you want, etc, etc).

    -Q
  • ok, before I do, I have a few questions....

    1. What the hell is ReactOS?
    2. Where can I get it?
  • [UPDATE] I downloaded thet ISO and extracted what I needed to extract, but I can't get the setup to start... why?
  • You tried booting from it? What happens?

you are supposed to boot from it?

    [update] Here's what happened:

Searching for boot record on Floppy: Not Found
Searching for boot record on CD-ROM: Not Found

Please insert boot disk into Drive A:
    Press enter to continue...
  • YES. That's why I asked if the CD drive was bootable! If this works then we know it's possible to install an NT-like OS.

    -Q
  • new update posted above ^^^
  • Aha...

Hmm, that's strange. If it's the ISO that WinWorld is linking to, then it's a valid bootable image.

    -Q
  • Can't you make a boot floppy and install ReactOS from there?

when u say extract do you mean u extracted the files from the image the burnt them onto CD or did u burn the ISO straight from the burning appplication (eg nero)?
  • To a CD...

My brother is looking into the cd boot problem...

    I'm on Windows 2000!!!!!!

I found the problem: one of my processors had died. I removed it and installed windows 2000! Thank you everyone for all of your help.

  • Hmm! That might do it!

Well, glad you got it in the end.

    -Q
  • WTF

do you have a dual processor system, or did the one processor die?
  • yes, I had a dual processor system. One of my processors dies and I didn't even know.

[update] I have successfully upgraded to Windows XP.
  • Hmmm, a dual p3 system, i think shell will have some input here.

btw how much did your dual system cost, i want one.
  • It's custom made. You have to buy the motherboard.
