KDE or GNOME?

edited April 2011 in Software
I currently use KDE 3.2, and it works like a son of a bitch (woot) , but I'm thinking of moving to GNOME because I've heard it is more stable (?).

  • Personally I find KDE is excellent. And in this case, "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" seems to apply well

  • KDE worked fine in SuSE..........
  • KDE is (in my opinion) THE GREATEST WM FOR LINUX! And for Unix OSs
  • well, in that case, I'll probably keep it. I am currently running SuSE 9.1 Personal and it seems ok, so I'll probably upgrade to KDE 3.3 and see how it goes. :)
  • HaH! Another SuSE usr!

    -Q
  • was that supposed to be a compliment?
  • the problem i found with SuSE personal is that its missing loads of dependancies
  • Yeah, the FTP install is Pro and gets around that.
  • i would have got prof if i didnt have to dish out 60 quid to buy it :( oh well
  • SuSE is "owns" (Although Novell really screwed thier site)!

I had that happen too, but that was because I really screwed my local install server, and sometimes the mirrors they list are like

    VERY true! novell sucks
  • Fish told me about the new site, it's aweful! The old one wasn't the best, but this one... I can't find my way around it!

  • i just use the german one and use babelfish.altavista.com to translate it
  • Don't use Linux. And when I have to deal with UNIX based OS's (not linux) I use BASH.

PS...your sig....Windows XPensive.... Micorosoft is a company. Companies make money, that's how the world works. If it didn't we would all be hobos.
  • HaHaHaHaH!! I Googed "SuSE" and the 2nd thing that came up was the downloads page. How you get to that from within the site I don't know.

    -Q

PS. NM, I figured it out ::roll:
  • i know.
    you go to suse.de
    click on Privatkunden
    click on Downloads
and in the address bar, change the /de/ to /en/
(it should end up being http://www.suse.com/en/private/download/index.html )

it takes you to the Novell SuSE downloads page, i dont know how to get there from suse.co.uk, though
  • You don't want to download SuSE. The personal edition isn't all that great. I used the professional edition and it's "ok" but I just heard bad things about personal.
  • which (free) version of linux could you recommend?
  • WTFbomb? SuSE is great! I've used it and it's alot better then RH (I think).

    -Q

PS. Then again, I used 9.1, I don't know what 9.2 is up to now. If it's as bad as their new site then I can understand ppl disliking it.
  • I'd say Slackware, but it's not good for beginners if you are one.

Just stay away from Redhat, Mandrake and Fedora Core. Most other stuff is ok
  • i'll probably get slackware if by suse packs up (i'm not too much of a beginner, ive been using various versions of linux for a year or so)
  • It's not that hard. I didn't know that much about it and turned it into a usable OS in a week
  • what the world needs is a linux distro that supports win32 .exe files (i don't mean using WINE or bochs or any emulators)
  • It's just not worth it.
  • WINE's the best bet for now, it'll get better with time (I hope), so eventually a good number of Windows apps should be presentable.

    -Q
  • you're probably right.
  • WINE is horrible. The compatability is like Windows 95 and it's SLOOOOW. WinAMP runs like a bug and locks up when opening files.
  • WINE site wrote:
This is still a developers only release. There are many bugs
and unimplemented features. Most applications still do not work
    correctly.

They say that for a reason.

    -Q
  • Some stuff runs, but it doesn't help that alot of the installers (InstallShield comes to mind) write stuff that REALLY doesn't like WINE.
