Heres the reason why I like GNOME. Uses less resources, easier to config your hardware (as in sound and video). It has tons of neat tools like a CD-Burning program. It also feels more like windows. If your Linux savy then try out WindowMaker. It's a clone of the NeXTStep GUI.
It uses less but offers better functionality, They are about evenly complied... Plus we are in the age of a 2gig Ram... what do you care... Also KDE has more window functions...
So far i've only seen four people with PCs with 2GB ram. All you need is 512 unless you do some hardcore stuff like graphics and CAD. Some times a hardcore gamer.
I'd say the standard now is 512, with a few of us possibly having 1 GB. That doesn't mean software is ALLOWED to be bloated and slow.
I've seen a compaq server on ebay, i think it had 8 intel xeon 2.0ghz processors and 16gb of ram! i think it wen for about 16,000$ us! one word, WOW!!!
as for software not allowed to be bloated, i agree. i have an intel celeron 416 with 128mb of ram. if software get too bloated i won't be able to anything with it.

Anyway, I don't have an internet connection in linux at all, so it's not needed.
