Heres the reason why I like GNOME. Uses less resources, easier to config your hardware (as in sound and video). It has tons of neat tools like a CD-Burning program. It also feels more like windows. If your Linux savy then try out WindowMaker. It's a clone of the NeXTStep GUI.

It uses less but offers better functionality, They are about evenly complied... Plus we are in the age of a 2gig Ram... what do you care... Also KDE has more window functions...

  • So far i've only seen four people with PCs with 2GB ram. All you need is 512 unless you do some hardcore stuff like graphics and CAD. Some times a hardcore gamer.
  • 256MB for games is hell, i should know......
  • Hell? No, its pretty enough for me unless you mean doom 3.
  • when i play GTA3 it goes all skippy every so often, specaially when sum1 tries to contact me through IM
  • That would be your video card most likely
  • nah, its well above th requirements
  • I;ve got a gig of ram. But why WOULD you need 2 gb of ram right now?
  • unless your into video editing or a high end server then probably no

  • i blame them if it says away then why do they try to contact me?
  • Yeah, I get that alot with Trillian. I forgot to close it and those popup notices during the game are very annoying.
  • dont close it, just turn off systray alerts, pisses me off when i watch videos as wel
  • I like those, but they do screw with StC, but not enough to bother me.

  • i ahev them on usually but when i have something full screen they go off
  • I hope Tril3 has an option somewhere "Disable systray alerts when another app is fullscreened".

    -Q
  • or "turn off when away"
  • When I have a full screen game, i just put the setting from Avail to Invisible
  • Is there a Trillian for Linux?
  • By strange co-incidence, Babb asked this question too...

  • I see...
Anyway, I don't have an internet connection in linux at all, so it's not needed.

Uh, who here has 2 GB of RAM?

    Exactly what I thought.

I'd say the standard now is 512, with a few of us possibly having 1 GB. That doesn't mean software is ALLOWED to be bloated and slow.

I've seen a compaq server on ebay, i think it had 8 intel xeon 2.0ghz processors and 16gb of ram! i think it wen for about 16,000$ us! one word, WOW!!!

as for software not allowed to be bloated, i agree. i have an intel celeron 416 with 128mb of ram. if software get too bloated i won't be able to anything with it.
  • i use pekwm, fluxbox and dwm on the computers i use
but was a heavy KDE 3 user before and also played with xfce and lxde and awesome
