i downloaded nt 4.0 workstation and i can't get any service packs on it.

list of problems:
SP6a requires internet explorer 4 or later (i cant find ie4 for NT 4)
IE6 requires SP6a so that's no good
IE5 requires SP3 and i can't find that anywhere
i cant get onto this site to download IE4 because IE2 is crap
any versions of IE4 i've found are for 3.1 or nt3.51 and my system still thinks i only have IE2

  • Download the SP6 file from MS. The whole pack is about 35Mb.
  • it needs IE 4 to install and i only have IE 2 (i said that in my previous post)
  • Dude, No.

I mean the ENTIRE SP that's like 35Mb. Not the web installer that's like under 5Mb.
  • ohhh, i see...
can you send me a link? i can't find it on the ms website
  • goto http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie and get IE from there. To download the entire Network Install package for SP6a, goto http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... p6i386.exe it's about 34-35 MB.
  • HaH! I got this problem when I tried NT4 aswell!

The best thing is to have SP6a ready and waiting on a seperate disk, or maybe in a seperate directory on the install CD, so you can install it @once.

  • Yeah that's what I do. Its annoying to go on IE2..
  • The throbber the best part of it...

    -Q
  • Get IE 5.5 off the AOL CD. Best throbber ever.

Yeah, don't be a retard. Mozilla does not run on all systems. For my 166MHz with NT4, I do use IE.
  • I use IE5 on my server lol.
  • AOLs throbber looks like someone pulled the stopper out of the drain, if it's the one I'm thinking of.

    PS. Who said Mozilla?
  • If it's a server then why does it need a browser?
  • Because none of us are rich enough to be able to afford to buy a dual AMD Opteron just to route some mails, server a few files and a website.

  • i think you could hypnotize someone with that AOhell throbber
  • it is hypnotizing..... but when i install IE from an AOL CD the throbber is the first thing i dump, then i change the regestry to get rid of that "provided by America Online" thing

but yeah i had this exact same problem! so i spent a long while downloading the entire service pack, installed it..... everything worked good..... just install firefox and and your good to go..... that is asuming your PC can handel firefox.... but chances are if your PC can handel firefox then it can probably handel 2000 as well... just my two cents....
  • I have SP6. Its on my file server if you want it. I also have IE 5.5 as well which will work with NT4.
  • ive got a IE4 disk with the thing that can do web intergration.....
  • IE2? Oh... lolnooo...
Could it even browse any sites? :)
  • when i use it in VPC it dont do many and u get all the javascript crap show up
  • Duh, becuase back then there was no Javascript.

It bas very basic HTML. Hell, they didn't have tables, frames, and DTHML and CSS were unheard of.
  • It may have an excuse, but it's still a terrible browser.

  • Yes, but go back to 1996. You would of loved it!
  • Back in 1996 I'd probably be using some ver of NS over my L33d Practical Peripherals 14.4K modem!

    -Q
  • in 1996 i didnt know what the internet was LOL

Most people didn't. The Internet did exist, but most people couldn't afford a modem back then or didn't have a dial-up account. Also, before 1996, you'd dial numbers to access sites rather than use IE or NS. I know this because that's how my bro did it back in 1995.
  • i didnt have a computer back then anyways
  • back in 96? my uncle had AOL and went to tons of trivia sites.... i remember back then i had to ask him for help to do somthing in like DOS or 3.1.... i was clueless.... but actually... that computer he used back then that had all those games and stuff he gave to me in .... i think 2002 or 2001 and it was my second computer next to the old 286 epson...

    O_O i thought 3.1 owned!

    then i thought 95 owned...... now i say NT (4, 5, 5.1) own

    times certainly change dont' they

I saw Netscape browser dated back to 1993
  • I think I have that one (Mozaic 0.9 I think it was).

    -Q
  • I've seen 0.3 version... but it could not open any modern HTML page.
