What about distros like Slackware that don't boot into X by default and give almost no configuration tools beside the ones that come with the packages (like the KDE control center)?
Linux is "easier" because everything's already stupidly done for you. That's why so many nubs install it, think they're all l337 hax0rz, until they have to actually open the terminal one day.
FreeBSD requires you to think. Linux doesn't. So yeah, I guess Linux IS easier for non-thinkers.
Even simple distros like Mandrake need a good level of thinking, like installing drivers from source...
