    Subnets are routing yah, they're used to find the network ID, which the router uses to foward the packet onto wherever.

    They also specify how many IPs you can have on one subnet. IP 4 has a certain capacity, which the subnet splits into so many networks of so many machines each (Without getting into the really complex stuff, which I don't remember).

    It sounds so easy, but it always manages to be... strange and ill defined. I would CONSTANTLY do it in class, and I never seemed to get more experienced with it.
