You could say that, but I think it came even before 2000. That's pretty old. But from what I read a few years ago, they started working on the Longhorn project in 1999. As in they wanted a home user version on NT. I guess this was the first attempt. XP was the successful one and now Vista. Can't wait to see Blackcomb lol.
Blackcomb was changed to Vienna and now it is offcially named "Windows 7". The 7 probably means NT 7.0. It is said to dump the start bar with some pie thing. Hope to see how the betas come out.
Of course alot of things are still here since Win3.1, but somethings that MS has improved on, they simply threw the old one out. Windows messenger was thrown out.
The things that get thrown out are usually the ones that make themselves popularly annoying (EG. Clippy, Windows Messenger, the Messenger svc, IP over 1394, etc).
XP would come with both the old "Windows Messenger" and the Msn Messenger. Windows live messenger is just the new name for Msn messenger. They arn't related to each other in any way. You can log on with 2 account on both of them simoultaneously.
OK, what exactly is the difference, and if MSN isn't Windows messenger, what were you supposed to do with "Windows Messenger" ?

Windows Messenger was the standard messenger that shipped with ME until Xp afaik. It was annyoing and pointless as everyone ahd ventured into using MSN messsenger. A much more better program.

Wrong. Windows Messenger did not ship with Windows Me. It first shipped with XP. Windows Messenger was geared more toward corporate/business user, where MSN is for home users.

Anyway, Messenger wasn't a bad idea in itself, the bad idea was to set it to automatic on a home machine, I think most will agree.

Personally, I like using Windows Messenger more than MSN Messenger. IMO, MSN/WLM seems alot more bloated than Windows Messenger.
