If anyone's even remotely interested (ha!) I'm attempting (yep, notice the choice of words) to create a useable OS from scratch in assembler. I need a bit of help for some ideas of how the OS could work.

    Visit http://hurstunlimited.myftp.org/projects/pub/hulos/ for more details.

    Thanks (dance)!

i've recently started writing an OS in asm, and i haven't got very far. the best os made wholly in assembler i know is MenuetOS (which i waaayyy better than i think i'll ever be!).

my point is, that if you want to make a really nice OS that's usable and (hopefully) compatible, you might want to try writing a kernel in C, or keep the kernel in ASM and have programs/stuff written in C/C++.

i would advise using linux as your development environment using VMWare (or bochs if you know what you're doing) to test it, although Windoze with MinGW/DJGPP and MSVPC will do fine.

if you want me to help you test HUL OS, then feel free!

and, just to add in some stuff about the first couple of pages (about hating linux)... linux is crap for programs/games (well, .exe files), but its GREAT for developing stuff like OS's or programs to run in linux (to make linux better)

i think i've written enough now...
  • Hey guys.
Really sorry for the delay, I know i've been off the boards for a while, but the HUL OS project is coming back online soon. For the latest info check out http://www.hurstunlimited.com/page.php? ... ud&menu=30
  • Might want to update your SF project page so it doesn't say .tk anymore.

    -Q
  • Yeah thanks Q, forgot about that.
  • yay! HULOS is comming back :) Can't wait to test it...

Of course, that link no longer works.
  • Very big update! ALPHA 1 is out! Goto http://sourceforge.net/projects/hulos/ if you want the latest release and the source code for it! This time it is fully compatible with all BIOS versions and bug free! More updates soon, as I'm very happy with this release.
  • tested it... it's good

I would recommend you abandon this old HUL OS thread and start a new one...
  • Oh, yeah! That's what I like to see!

Anyway, I'd love to join the HUL OS Team as well, probably in the Development area.

Also, I can contribute webserver space and the like as well. Damn 80GB HDD Spare doing nothing, so I may as well.
