The most stupid questions you've ever been asked

edited August 2004 in Hardware
Just wondering what are some of the most stupid questions you've ever been asked about computers by newbies... I've got a whole heap of them!

  • A CD and a DVD are the the same though, right?
  • It says it needs 64MB of RAM... my hard disk is much bigger than that, so why doesn't it work!!!!???
  • Oh yeah! Well I've got Internet Explorer version 15! Beat that!
  • Can I put a floppy disk in a zip drive?
  • How was I supposed to know putting a massive magnet on my PC case would screw it up?
  • Laptops are like portable computers right?

some n00b asked me "how can i install macos x on my new dell?
  • LOL, little off, but heres a tech support call I made up! I heard WAAAY worse though........

"ok, sir, push the little start button on the lower corner of the screen"
    "I dont see it"
    "is it turned on ?"
    "yes, the screen is on"
    "now, do you see it?"
    "no, its just all black"
"ok, well you gotta turn on the computer"
"the what? I got the computer, its that big TV thinger!"
  • Well, I once had a fellow student and teacher telling me that "Any CD drive can play DVD's if you have the right drivers, can't it ?." The kid's mom worked for IBM....
  • the people that get me, are the ones that don't know what version of windows they're using... I've had many conversations such as this:
"what Operating System are you using?"
    "what's that mean"
"ok... what version of Windows are you using"
    "i don't understand"
"you know... when you start the computer what does it say"
    "i don't know"
"It'll say something like "starting Windows 95" or 98, or ME, or 2000, or XP"
    "ohhhhh, 98"

Or something to that effect, lol
  • Hey Fish! Remember Weinstein and the CDROMs?

  • How fast is your computer? Mine is like 8 gigabyte. It is so slow I'm gonna put a 120db in it. that will be much faster...
  • You've got a good point there, MM. :P
  • Ah well, it's not-very-bright people who give computer support people jobs

Ironically I just got a call from a friend saying he had tried to open a document a friend had given him but it appeared all wrong. After about half an hour I established he was trying to open a MS Word doucment with Notepad ::roll:

    SOMEONE SHOOT ME, PLEASE!
    ](*,)
  • Well.... I think the Dumbest thing some one has ever asked me was:

Why wont my computer turn on.......well thats all good but i asked if The computer was pluged in. she said yes so i went down to try to fix it and the surge protecter was pluged into it self. that wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt my computer teacher that asked me.

Hey. No Nothing has some pretty great stories there! Nice job!
  • two weeks ago, i had some woman call me and she asked me:
She: how in the world am i out of memory?
me: how much ram do you have
    She: what?
    Me: memory!
    She: 512
    Me WTF?

so i go over there and took a good look at her process table. she had 2 variants of blaster, a copy of sobig, spyware and porn apps bonzi, and almost every single variant of my doom.
so of cource i start downloading AVG to get rid of the viruses. she then yells at me saying that im downloading a trojan on to her computer. i tell her that it is a virus scanner so her computer will be healthy. she forces me to stop, saying that she doesnt have enough space and also anti-virus programs are for losers. keeping with her word, i then tried to download patches from microsoft update when she forces me to stop again and not to download anything. i started to get a little pissed off at her, so i went to the add and remove programs dialog and started uninstalling some of the spyware programs (she also had practally two of everything) she then stops me again saying that that was her shit and did not want me to mess with that.
i then got up and told her to fix her damn computer by herself. and i left. from what i heard she went out and got another computer and has already screwed that one up.
  • That sucks. I think you had so much patience to stay with her as long as you did!
  • and she is still calling me, this time she said she deleted something and now she gets an Inaccesable boot device error. im not going to help her, she has to fix her own damn computer
  • You got it! I can't stand people like that. If they ask for help, they need to lay back and realize that they called a professional because they are not professionals. If they knew what they were doing, they wouldn't need people like us.
  • ive never had a "noob" ask me anything about pcs

however, people trying to impress me (or show off) say things that arent true, and when i tell them that the thing isnt true theyre like, "yes it is, you dont know anything, idiot!"

    ps:64-Bit
  • Ohhh, tht happened to me in school here is the story:

I was walking down the hall to my Computer Class with my laptop. Word got around the school that i was "Mr. Computer Genius" (well kinda, but not th t much) So this one kid came walking down the hall and says I am smarter than you and got a better PC that you! So i said, what are your computer specifications and he said I got a Pentium 8.97 With a 76 Trillionhertz processor, and a 80 Kilomegabite Harddrive. and he contenued and got to the RAM and says I got 5 books of RAM! SO I asked him what OS does he have, and he says " I got Windows M&M" (i guess he liked M&Ms?)

BTW - I wasn;t doin this for a competition, askin like I was amazed...

Guess he didn't like me? Or just wanted to show off? I don't know.

Sorry if this may be off topic though...
  • the thing that annoys me is when n00bs try to install hardware without readin the manual. they then screw it up and ask me for help.
when i help them they don't listen to a word i say so it happens again......

then there's the person who tried to install a modem on a computer with no spare com ports.
he tried to force it into the printer port and was wandering why it didn't work too well...

and some people try to install software onto their computer without looking at the system requirements.

    argh.........

windows 97 ....... now that was amusing

Same over here Mr. Clean. They also doubt my ablities.
  • Most of all I laughed at the second phrase: "It says it needs 64MB of RAM... my hard disk is much bigger than that, so why doesn't it work!!!!???"
  • Yeah Slash, I hear that often too.
  • Kind of off topic, but oh well. When we got our 400 MHz Celeron from CompUSA a few years ago, it was advertised as having 32 MB of RAM. It said nothing about the video. Other models (in the CompUSA circular, but not CompUSA brand PC's, like ours was) addmited in the description that they used shared video. Apparently ours did, but we didn't know it.

We got this software a bit later. It was that speech recognition stuff, L & H. It need 32 MB of RAM. It wouldn't install. It told us we had only 24. Now with the 486 we had before this, the placed screwed us over and gave us less of a PC than we payed for. I was little then, and my dad didn't know as much about computers either. My cousin came over and figured it out. So we were weary of such a thing happening again. We went to the upgrade desk and complained. We showed the ad (always save your circualrs) and they gave us more RAM for free! I think we got another 24 or 32 MB. That was a really big thing then! They guy that was running the register at the upgrade desk nearly dropped his mouth open when the tech guy told him it was free! It was pretty cool!
  • I once asked a guy if he had an external floppy drive for his laptop. He replyed by saing: "No its quite solid"
  • Once I was at the computer show to buy some memory for a friend of mine and after I bought the memory I started to look around and see what new hardware and software was in the works. I was at the Intel Table looking at some new chipsets and CPUs and over heard theses two kids that were no older then 16 fighting about what was the frist MS OS. One kept on saying "Windows 3.1 was the frist." the other one said "Theres no such thing. Windows 95 was the frist." I started to laugh and they noticed me and thought I didn't know shit about computers. At the time I was wearing my bellsouth work shirt and I guess they thought I was a stupid phone guy lol. Anyway, One of them said "What are you laughing at?" I said "You guys don't know crap about computers. DOS was the frist" The guy from the Intel Table started to tell them the whole DOS story that it was a OS that MS bought that was no more then a remake of CP\M called Q-DOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System). They didn't believe us.

Two years ago I use to help out in a IRC warez channel and people that claimed to do that kinda of stuff for years would ask for help on easy stuff. Like how to use a ZIP or RAR files. It would piss me off when they would come in a say "I'm a master with warez. How do I use ZIP files?" I would help them then I would cuss them out for lieing to us saying they're "warez masters".

Wasnt BASIC and MS Operation System? But that has been around since the 1960's,.....Microsoft kind of made they're own version.
  • Once my friend asked me by phone how to install a program. I said that first of all you should find an icon "my computer" at the desktop and look there for disk D: (CDROM).

After two minutes i got his call again. I said "Was it successful?" He answered "No". Then I asked "What's the problem?" He said that he could not find the desktop!!! lmao
  • Wow. People can be so stupid sometimes. We have to have a lot of patience!
  • heres a quote from ebay

"starts up fine all ram slots filled with cd and floppy drives"

    some n00b tring to sell a p133
  • LOL. Sad thing is, some other n00b will buy it. How much do they want for it? I could unload some systems like that on ebay!
